Book Sale Well, let me tell you a few things….

Flowers are blooming.  Muriel and Charles Friend deserve a huge round of applause in recognition for the great job they do with planting and maintaining the flowers around the Big Flats Branch Library.  Every year, without my asking, they come and fill our planters and stuff our grounds with a wide assortment of beautiful flowers.

We are now hosting a mini book sale shelf from the Friends of CCLD.  Hard covers are $2.00 and soft covers are $1.00.  What a bargain!  All proceeds from this sale benefit the Big Flats Branch Library.

Display Case A new display case has generously been donated by the Big Flats Library Advocates.  Pat Silvernail does a great job with organizing the monthly displays and recruiting volunteers to fill the case.

An advance thanks to the Town of Big Flats Highway Department.  They are bringing over some heavy equipment and donating a pile of sand for a Tuesday night Summer Reading Club program in July.  It is always a pleasure to work with the Town of Big Flats and hope to do more in the future.

Every Spring the Big Flats Women’s Club donates a Spring basket for raffle.  This year the basket raised $195 for the library.  Thank you all BFWC members.

Come see the newly re-modeled Big Flats Library.  You will be amazed!

The Big Flats Library, without a doubt, has the most interesting and colorful windows in the community. This is because of two very artistic Big Flats teens, Maddessen Wright and Justin Gregory. Maddessen is the daughter of library clerk, Cassie Wright, and occasionally unleashes her talent on our library windows. Justin is probably what you would call our “full time” window designer. If you have not already checked out our windows, it is a must see. New designs will be coming in mid-June to promote our Summer Reading Club.

Pop-up Books“Pop-Up-Book-Mania” at the Big Flats Library

We have over 100 titles of fantastic pop-up books now available for the public to see. Due to the fragile nature of these books, our pop-ups are “in-library use only” and cannot be taken out. The artistic detail in some of these books is absolutely unbelievable.

Some titles available are:

  • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
  • Star Wars: A pop-up guide to the galaxy
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar pop-up Book
  • How Does your Garden Grow
  • The Wild West

Plus many, many more.

Come take a look, I guarantee you will be amazed!

Justin Gregory has never been a fan of a blank wall. Now the Horseheads Middle School student has brought color and life to the windows at the Big Flats Branch of the Chemung County Library District.

Justin painted the windows at the library after pitching the idea to and gaining approval from Library District officials. According to District Director Ronald Shaw, “The Board and staff were very receptive to the idea. The staff and patrons look forward to seeing what he’s going to do next.”

The window painting project gave Justin the opportunity to use a variety of themes, from Dr. Seuss to the Beatles, in ways that appeal to audiences of all ages.

“The inspiration for the windows has come from my desire to learn more about art in general, and drawing in particular” said Justin, “I read art books, how to draw books, and study anatomy. I guess you could say that my mind is a melting pot of my own and others’ ideas with my own style added. The windows themselves are painted in reverse and take about 3-5 hours to complete.”

Library Board member Judy Sell noted that “Justin enjoys painting the windows. His work shows how much he enjoys it and we hope others will enjoy it as well. The ultimate goal is to pull in readers.”
