The staff of the Chemung County Library District’s Bookmobile serving Chemung County since 1949 is proud to be 1 of 11 Bookmobiles operating  in New York State. This year we have added 5 new stops to our  schedule:  Chapel Park, Diven School Community, Diven School, Oakridge Park, and Elmira Christian Center.  We invite everyone to visit one of our stops throughout Chemung County.  Click here to find a stop near you!

Your Chemung County Library District’s Bookmobile won first place in a website contest held by Laurie Cass. Laurie Cass is the author of the mystery titled: Lending a Paw. A bookmobile as well as a cat are featured prominently in this cozy mystery.  Ms. Cass wanted pictures of real bookmobiles on the website as part of the promotion for her book. We submitted this photo and wouldn’t you know it? We won!  Bookmobile

Our prize was 2 copies of her book Lending a Paw.  According to Library Journal, “it’s hard to resist a cozy debut featuring a spunky librarian with an impeccable service attitude and her slightly magical cat who rides shotgun on her bookmobile. Well researched, with low-key humor and an intriguing mystery–don’t miss this one.” When these lines were typed both copies were checked out however, you can place a hold from the STARCat catalog. Click here to place a hold for this purrfect [sic]  mystery today.

Finally, once the snow melts and the polar vortex returns to the Arctic, join your Chemung County Library District Bookmobile in celebrating National Bookmobile Day on April 16, 2014. There will be more details in the Library District’s April 2014 Newsletter.

Unclutter your lifeAs I have been newly assigned to take charge of this vast sea of books called the Non-fiction Collection, I have also been given the daunting task of writing the “Librarians Picks” column. Much like the collection, there are so many incredible subject categories to choose from, to write about, and to recommend. Even if you are not a regular non-fiction reader, in order to counteract the winter blues, broaden your spectrum of knowledge, or just read something different you should give one of our non-fiction books a chance. Walking down the aisles, I see books on Cookery for preparing every food imaginable, and books for improving your health or organizing your home. On the first floor of Chemung County Library District-Central Library, just past the Customer Service desk, you will find the newly purchased non-fiction books readily available for browsing.

Our Adult Services Department has been doing Adult programs in the library themed “New Year, New You.” So in keeping with this theme I chose three new books that might interest you for those New Year resolutions.

Hungry Girl 200 Under 200 Just Desserts by Lisa Lillien, recipes for decadent treats all under 200 calories.

Unclutter Your Life In One Week written by Erin Rooney Doland, practical steps to organize your home, your office and even your life!

Quit Smoking For Life A Simple, Proven 5-Step Plan by Suzanne Schlosberg lays out a plan to finally beat the smoking habit.

USA.gov, is the official government website to find government information and services on the internet.  Government services are indexed A-Z, including “Health Insurance,” “Passports,” or “Unclaimed Money from the Government.”  You can also browse Government services that  are indexed by topic or subject areas.  An example of this would be the subject entitled “Benefits and Grants: Online Services” which includes information on housing assistance, government grants, veteran benefits and much more.  Government agencies are alphabetically listed as well; in this section you will also find links for state and local government representatives, local agencies and the proper contact info.  There is a tab for the section called Blog, which covers current events which could include comments about weather patterns or sometimes warnings about scams.  This is also the site to get Free Government publications on a wide variety of topics including Going Green, Pet Care, or Nutrition. This is a great site for all kinds of Government Information….bookmark it today!
