The Central Branch (Steele Memorial Library) of the Chemung County Library District is very proud of our agreement with the New York State Health Department to house the New York State Vital Statistics Index on microfiche at our library.  The indexes are from 1880 to 1937 for births and 1880 to 1962 for marriages and deaths.  Genealogists must come to the library to use the microfiche (see www.ccld.lib.ny.us/vitalstats.htm for more about the vital statistics).

There has been lots of talk on genealogist listservs about whether the index will be put online and now a part of it has been put online. We have put a link to it on our genealogy links page:  http://ccld.lib.ny.us/genealogy_links.htm.  Scroll down  and you will see Upstate New York Death Records 1957-1963.  Click the link and have fun with the test run of the NYS Vital statistics Index online!
